Living ‘micro’: single residents embrace tiny apartments:

The below video highlights the rise in the need for single residence living spaces.

The video shows the spaces to be:

  • Compact

  • Multi functional

  • Popular in cities such as Vancouver

  • A new way to accommodate a growing population and people wanting to live alone

  • Rented at an affordable rate relative to the city

  • Use of technology and the need for space

  • Cities want to retain young professionals and recent graduates

  • However concerns are voiced that this will make neighbourhoods less stable

  • Another concern is that micro apartments could replace housing for lower middle income and homeless

‘Micro Apartment’:

The below video shows a redesigned old 1960 apartment.

With space at a premium, functionality is key. Below I have noted my key findings from watching.

  • A strong divide between sleeping and living is created

  • Visual seperation

  • Functionality in design

  • Material palette keep to a minimum

  • Design for purpose
