Critic Tom Dyckhoff examines how architecture affects us at home, work, play and how buildings can profoundly impact on our feelings and identity in the series 'The Secret Life of Buildings". In the episode I watched Chris explores how the design of our homes influences our behaviour and asks why we accept the smallest windows and room sizes in Europe? He also travels to Copenhagen to meet with Architect Bjarke Ingels and tours the 8 House project which is an untraditional way of mixing, houses, apartments and, retail spaces.
"It’s time to rethink our relationship with the most important buildings in our life. The places where we work, where we live and where we play.In this programme, I’m going to look at where we live. Our home should make us feel happy, healthy and secure. But are the new homes we’re building doing just the opposite? we’re being squeezed into buildings that deprive us of basic needs like space, light and good design" Tom Dyckhoff
“8 House is our second realized example of architectural alchemy – the idea that by mixing traditional ingredients, retail, row- houses and apartments in untraditional ways – you create added value if not gold. The mix allows the individual activities to find their way to the most ideal location within the common framework – the retail facing street, the offices towards northern light and the residences with sun and views to the open spaces. 8 House is a perimeter block that morphs into a knot, twisting and turning to maximize the life quality of its many inhabitants,” Bjarke Ingels, Founding Partner, BIG
